The new district of Tulbagh was established in 1804 and by the end of that year the construction of the Drostdy commenced. In 1805 the renowned architect, Louis Michel Thibault was asked to re design the Drostdy. Architecturally, the Drostdy is mainly Neo-Classical in style and reflects the French background of Thibault. The Coach house adjoining the Drostdy was completed around the same time in 1806. The fact that the Drostdy is built outside the town, makes De Oude Drostdy at Tulbagh unique in South Africa During 1822 the Drostdy was damaged by gale force wind and torrential rain after which the seat of the Landdrost was moved to Worcester and the Drostdy was passed into private ownership. On 22 July 1934 the Drostdy was severely damaged by a fire. On 29 September 1969 disaster struck again when it was damaged by the earthquake In 1974, the building was restored to its original graceful dignity by the National Monuments Council and is now owned by Historiese Huise van SA Bpk De Oude Drostdy houses a fine collection of early Cape furniture and house hold articles as well as a extensive gramophone collection
